El Rayo, Spanish for…The Rayo. 06/05/2009
![]() There has been much hype for Portland’s newest Mex destination. It is well worth it. This gas station turned brightly colored restaurant is the best Mexican food going. The seemingly awkward location is actually quite ideal. Away from the crowded streets of the Old Port and abutting the more industrial side of town. Glimpses of the working water front can be had from the picnic tables (with padded benches) out front. The menu is straight forward. I can personally only vouch for the fish tacos (it takes 3 to make a proper lunch), but my dining companions were nodding in improvement of their meals as well. El Rayo has ended the good Mexican food drought in this town. The owner mentioned that they have been a bit overwhelmed by the crowds surging in for lunch, comparing it to being born and then immediately turning 21. The response has been so overwhelming that they shut down dinner for the past week or so. Dinner service is back tonight, just in time for First Friday. Go there. Go there now. 4 Comments The Bounty of February. 02/05/2009
![]() As we enter further into the depths of winter, solace can be found in the form of free oysters and cheap beer at J’s and Dogfish, respectively. From 4-6pm all Feb. long, the salty wait staff at J’s Oyster Bar sling paper plates of oysters for happy hour patrons to enjoy. They set aside a limited quantity of free mollusks, so get there on the early side. Starting next week, Dogfish Bar & Grill (on Free St.) launches its $1 draft Mondays, $2 draft Tuesdays and $3 draft Wednesdays during happy hour. As you can imagine, attendance is strong. La Mousse. 01/28/2009
![]() Mousse Cafe is perhaps the most underrated and over looked dinning spot on the peninsula. They opened their doors late last Summer and have been a personal favorite ever since. Everything is home-made; from the clam chowder, to the baked goods, to the ice cream. Lunch is their specialty, but they also have a killer breakfast, that is served all day. Their hours are generous as well. Only closed on Sundays. All Allagash. 08/05/2008
![]() MSN gives a nod to Allagash in their line-up of top summer beers. The Belgian style beer that Allagash cooks up seems to be growing in popularity. The tastes are definitely a departure from the standard American crap, and the ABV is certainly compelling. Allagash has a few events lined up for August and September to show off their beers. On the 12th of August, they will be at Evangeline from 6 to 8pm, supporting The Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association. $10 and space is limited. Contact Allagash for info: info@allagash.com. On the 23rd of this month, the Alligashians will be at Vignola from 2 to 4pm, for a Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital fundraiser. This year’s Fluxus will be on display. On September 25th, the Great Lost Bear is holding an Allagash event from 5 to 9pm. |
